CRM Radio Merit Badge Lesson Plan
When BSA Camp Rainey Mountain decided to start a new Tech Studies merit badge department, I was asked to put together a lesson plan for the Radio Merit Badge.
I found a number of resources on the Internet, including one day presentations from K2GW and AA6J. Unfortunately, nothing quite fit the bill, so I pulled together a program from many sources. Credit goes to K2GW for a good portion of this material.
I was looking to create a program that would meet the following goals.
- The program had to be covered in 5 45min class periods
- The badge material is a bit dry, so I wanted to break things up a bit to keep the Scouts attention
- Make Friday (day 5) a fun activity related to the badge
During the creation of this program, we decided to use an RDF fox hunt as the Friday activity. So day 4 provides some background info and show & tell related to RDF. Other pages on this website show some of the RDF equipment that was built for the class.

One Day Class for JOTA 2010
The Radio merit badge will be offered in conjunction with JOTA 2010 and the GARS Fall Frequency Festival. The following files are a revised lesson plan structured for the 2010 one day JOTA class. The plan is also to use this version of the lesson plan for the Apalachee Advance-A-Rama in Feb 2011.
